Almost every month a new research is released with statistics about sexual violence in college campuses in the United States. Some of them talk about 1 in 4 female students being assaulted, other say 1 in 5, and so it goes.
Here you have a few numbers. According to a recent study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1 in 5 women is sexually assaulted during her college years. That stat is just horrible, but there is one that's even worse. In a survey made last year by the Association of American Universities, 1 in 4 women reported sexual assault on campus.
A study by the Alaska Justice Center revealed that last year 1 in 9 female students of the University of Alaska reported being a victim of sexual misconduct or assault.
Anyway, it would still be an ugly number if the proportion were 1 in 1.000. Let's clear things up. This is not just a number, it’s someone’s life. It’s not another statistic, it represents a crime. There is no good number in this case. Well, there is one actually. Zero sounds pretty good to us.
“It's on all of us to take responsibility to do something, big or small, to be a part of the solution to end sexual violence”, says Rebecca Kaplan, Director of the It’s On Us movement. “You can do your part by joining the It's On Us movement and sparking conversation about consent and bystander intervention with your friends, family, and classmates.”
Two years ago the White House did a campaign to generate awareness about these statistics. The movement had a great impact at the time, but the wave has lost traction in the course of time. We want to revamp this wave of awareness and raise commitment. We need to keep fighting to grow the community doing something about these terrible statistics.
That’s why we want to invite you to share the hashtag #OneIsTooMany That’s why we want to invite you to share the hashtag #OneIsTooMany with everyone. Be it with twitter, facebook, snapchat! Let’s show the world that we won’t tolerate any other sexual assault on campus. Actually, we won’t tolerate any other sexual assault. Period.
#OneIsTooMany to us. Is it to you?
